Why Having a Strong Personality Isn’t So Bad After All
Rude. Domineering. Straight Forward. Difficult to work with. These are the common conceptions whenever we encounter people with a strong personality.
They are often misunderstood because it seems that most of the time, they wanted to do it their way instead of being cooperative with the group. A strong personality can intimidate people while working together due to many reasons.
It is mostly interpreted as “ it can do more harm rather than bring productivity “ because these people who have these kinds of personality can be straightforward with doing their work based on how they can predict the situation.
However, there are things that people need to understand in order for them to collaboratively work together so that a certain group or organization can maximize their personality and push for further development and productivity while working in a team.
These things can help us understand those who have a strong personality and avoid intimidation:
People who have a strong personality can focus on achieving the goal.
Strong-willed people are often goal-oriented, “doing everything it takes” kind of people. They’ll do everything within their power just to achieve the goal.
One of the impressive traits about them is that they are decisive and have calculated their options to avoid risk in order to achieve the goal. In their determination and being focused, some may see them as snobbish and arrogant when it comes to working as part of a team.
Let us not fall into the trap of miscommunications because we may fail to maximize their abilities that can be beneficial to the team’s progress. If you encounter such people like these, don’t be intimidated and give them space to focus on the problem at hand.
Engage them in a healthy discussion so that they can speak their mind and carefully evaluate their thoughts.
Remember that people who can focus on their work are mostly impatient. Don’t take this personally and learn how to work with them in a manner that their role in a team can be identified and purposeful.
People with strong personalities are fit to lead. Instead of being intimidated by them, try to befriend them and work as a team so that you can have someone who can be strong enough to lead you towards the goal.
What is annoying to some is that these people don’t take any excuses or irrational behavior within the team. Since they are goal-oriented, any weak link in the team can piss them off.
This can be beneficial to those who are lazy and incompetent to improve since they are working with a determined person. Again, make use of their strengths instead of being intimidated.
People who have a strong personality are confident in showing what they can do and who they are as a person.
If you are a person with such great skills, you want your abilities to be put to use. This is why a lot of people who have a strong personality are confident and will show others who they are and what they can do.
They are often convincing and have the ability to influence others because of the expertise they have and the amount of work they put in just to develop their competence.
What seems offending is that they can be interpreted as showing off their skilfulness. It may lead to unhealthy competition among workers or team members.
Their overconfidence may be too much for other people to handle. This can be the start of envy of other workers because they are attractive to superiors. This trait of people can have a certain impact on the harmony of the team.
My advice for those who are working with these type of people is, “Be the bigger person”! Confidence is different from arrogance or purposefully boasting one’s abilities.
People who have a strong personality are highly opinionated and can’t easily be swayed by other’s opinion.
These people dwell mostly on the rational side of their brains rather than being led by emotions. People who have strong personalities believe that dwelling on the emotional side can impair their rational decision making.
Most of the time, they process thoughts, ideas, philosophy, and arguments and have a stand on it. So whenever there are situations that require careful judgment, these people have thought about it over and over again to come up with a strong rational stand.
If you encounter these people and a situation where your opinion is needed to come up with a decision as a team, make sure that your idea is well thought of.
This is because most people who have a strong personality have thought about it many times. And that’s the reason why they are not easily swayed by other’s opinion.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to agree with them all the time. But if you put the same amount of processing and contemplating how effective and sound your ideas are, you can gain their respect.
Make use of their confidence to lead the team to greater success. If you can manage to work with them, emulate their confidence and aim for a harmonious working relationship.
