Why Neglecting Physical Health is a Major No-No
What is the first thing that comes to mind whenever someone asks you if you are taking care of your physical health?
Exercise? Diet plans?
These are the top 2 answers that a common person would say. However, if we look at the definition of physical health, it proves to be more than just exercise and diet but a combination of things that concerns a person’s physical aspect.
Neglecting it today can cause a serious problem tomorrow. So it’s best to be informed about how we can take care of our physical health and be proactive in maintaining it’s overall well-being.
What do we mean by Physical Health?
According to study.com, “Traditional definitions of physical health prior to the onset of modern medicine would have considered someone physically healthy if he or she was not stricken with a serious illness. With modern medical innovations came longer life spans, which changed the way we define physical health. Today’s definition can consider everything ranging from the absence of disease to fitness level.”
It is best to say that if we want to know the state of our physical health, we can start by identifying any kind of illness or disease that we acquired over the years through regular check-ups (meaning you willfully see your doctor) and APEs (Annual Physical Exam is mandatory) done or sponsored by your company.
Some people aren’t ready to know their health state because they may be limited by their potential disease to have the kind of lifestyle they want. For some who are regularly seeing the doctor for them to be updated on their physical health status, it’s a good sign of you not neglecting your health.
These may be the people who believe in saying that, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
A comprehensive understanding of physical health should include the aspects of physical activity, diet and nutrition, abstinence from dangerous or addictive substances, proper sleep and recuperation through rest, and of course, getting the right kind of medical treatment. The last one should be preventive rather than to address an already present health condition.
Why do a lot of people neglect it?
We need to admit that most of us prioritize our plans, dreams, and careers to achieve success. In doing so, anything else that is within the given category comes second, third or even last in our priority list.
Since most are focused on pursuing satisfaction and comfort in life, anything that concerns a person’s physical construct was put on the side.
I think it is part of the culture to glorify those who are working for longer hours than to prioritize one’s overall wellness. It’s such a common sense that if we neglect entirely our physical health, the pursuit of the kind of life that we want will be greatly affected.
But still, there are fewer efforts from the part of those people who strive for greater income, sacrificing their overall physical health. This is true since there are sayings that encourage young professionals to “work hard and party harder”.
If this language persists within the workforce, it can be a sign that most will disregard the importance of their physical health.
Another reason for such neglect is a lack of attention to the government’s urgent and unwavering call for the importance of physical healthcare. This is still an individual’s shortcoming since Singapore’s healthcare is one of the best and most comprehensive in the world.
Human Resource is one of the most important assets of a nation. This is one of the reasons why the government is continuously being proactive in its campaign towards health and well-being.
